Small Kitchens, Smart Choices
Countertops in Churubusco are often smaller projects done well. The town had 1,870 residents and 864 housing units at the 2020 census, In a town that size, many kitchens are modest rather than sprawling, and a smaller kitchen gives you more options, not fewer. When a room needs only a couple of runs and a short peninsula, a remnant slab or a single full slab may cover the whole job, and that opens the door to materials people assume are out of reach.
A tight market for homes
The 2020 census recorded a homeowner vacancy rate of 0.0% in Churubusco, with 828 of the 864 units occupied, and the rental vacancy rate was only 4.3%. When there is so little open housing, upgrading the house you have is often the practical move, and a countertop is one of the most visible changes you can make without adding a room.
Getting the most from a compact layout
- Remnant quartz or granite: for a vanity, a short run beside the range or a coffee bar, a remnant can be an efficient use of stone.
- One-slab kitchens: we lay out the cut plan so the whole kitchen comes from one slab where possible, which keeps the color and pattern consistent.
- Laminate and solid surface: for a laundry room, mudroom or utility sink area, these still make sense and install quickly.
- Bathroom vanity tops: swapping an old cultured-marble top for quartz with an undermount bowl is a one-day change that makes a dated bathroom feel new.
Where the town came from
Churubusco grew from two 19th-century towns, Union and Franklin, that sat on either side of a railroad track, and its post office has been open since 1848. It takes its name from the 1847 Battle of Churubusco, a name suggested by local teacher Eliza Rich. Every measure is taken on site. Older cabinets may be shallower or out of level, and we account for that before a slab is cut.
Plumbing and appliance changes
If you are keeping the sink where it is, a new top usually means just disconnecting and reconnecting the faucet and drain. If you want to move the sink, add a dishwasher or relocate a cooktop, ask the town or Whitley County what approvals apply before you start, and line up a plumber or electrician. We will plan the install day around that work.

Turtle Days timing
The town holds Turtle Days, described as the oldest continually held festival in Indiana and tied to the legend of Oscar the Turtle, the "Beast of Busco," a giant snapping turtle said to be about the size of a small car. As the story goes, he lived in Fulk's Lake, which was drained without turning him up, and no one has ever caught him. The festival runs each year at the local park grounds with rides, games, live music and vendors. If your street fills up for the festival, tell us and we will schedule delivery on a quieter day.

Churubusco Questions
Is quartz realistic for a small Churubusco kitchen?
Often, yes. A compact kitchen may need only one slab, and a vanity or coffee bar can sometimes come from a remnant. We lay out the cut plan during the measure so you can see what the job really needs.
Do you come out to Churubusco for small jobs like a single vanity?
Yes. Churubusco is about 16 miles from Fort Wayne and a single vanity top is a perfectly good reason to call.
My older Churubusco house has uneven cabinets. Is that a problem?
It is something we check at the measure. Cabinets need to be level and solid before stone goes on, and we will tell you if any shimming or repair is needed first.
