Solid Surface and Laminate: Practical Choices

Solid surface and laminate countertops cost less than stone and quartz, and for many rooms they are simply the right choice. Laminate is a printed, resin-hardened sheet glued over a wood-composite core. Solid surface, which Corian popularized, is cast acrylic or polyester with the color running through its full thickness. Both are common in Fort Wayne rentals, laundry rooms, basement bars, and kitchens where the owners plan a larger remodel in a few years.

Laminate today

Modern high-pressure laminate looks far better than the speckled tops of the 1980s. Wood grains, stone patterns and matte finishes are common, and edges can be square, beveled or a no-drip profile that keeps spills off the cabinet doors. HomeGuide's installed laminate figures are $20 to $80 a square foot, which comes to $600 to $3,200 in a mid-size kitchen. Fixr's installed range is $15 to $60. The limits are real: laminate cannot take a hot pan, a knife cut goes through the pattern, and water that gets into the core at a seam or around a sink makes it swell. That last point is why undermount sinks are generally not used with standard laminate.

Solid surface

Solid surface is non-porous and can be joined with nearly invisible seams. It can also be formed into an integral sink, so the bowl and counter are one continuous piece with no rim to catch grime. Angi's 2026 guide puts installed solid surface at $50 to $150 per square foot, with total projects from $1,500 to $9,000 and an average around $3,000. Its big advantage is repairability: light scratches on matte or semi-gloss finishes can be sanded out, and Angi lists professional repairs at $150 to $750. It is softer than quartz and should not take a hot pan.

Where these surfaces fit

  • Rental properties: laminate is durable enough, quick to install and inexpensive to replace.
  • Before selling: a fresh laminate or solid surface top can update a dated kitchen for listing photos.
  • Laundry rooms and mudrooms: a folding counter or utility sink surround does not need stone.
  • Bathrooms: solid surface with an integral bowl is easy to clean and has no seam around the sink.
  • Older homes on a budget: a simpler top now, with stone later when cabinets are replaced.

Installing in older kitchens

Laminate is more forgiving than stone of a slightly uneven cabinet, but a top that is not supported will still sag over time. In older Fort Wayne kitchens with out-of-square walls, we scribe the backsplash to the wall so it sits tight. Sink and cooktop openings are cut on site or in fabrication, and edges around the sink are sealed against water.

Hard water and cleaning

Both surfaces handle mineral spotting well, since they are non-porous and do not react to mild acids the way marble does. Avoid abrasive powders on glossy laminate and solid surface, since they can dull the finish.

Solid Surface & Laminate Countertops Questions

What is the most affordable countertop?

Laminate, by a wide margin: HomeGuide puts installed laminate at $20 to $80 a square foot, about $600 to $3,200 for a mid-size kitchen. It is a good fit for rentals, laundry rooms and kitchens with a remodel planned later.

Is solid surface better than laminate?

Solid surface costs more but is the same material all the way through, can have seamless joints and an integral sink, and shallow scratches buff out. Laminate costs less but cannot be repaired once the top layer is cut or burned.

Can I have an undermount sink with laminate?

Standard laminate is generally used with drop-in sinks, because water reaching the exposed core around an undermount opening causes swelling. Solid surface works very well with undermount and integral sinks.

Can solid surface countertops be repaired?

Yes. Light scratches on matte or semi-gloss finishes can be sanded out. Angi lists professional repairs at $150 to $750.

Is laminate heat resistant?

No. A hot pan can blister or scorch laminate. Use trivets, the same as with quartz and solid surface.
