Upgrading the Builder Package

Countertops in Huntertown often go into fairly new houses. The town went from 4,810 residents in 2010 to 9,141 in 2020, a 90% jump, much of it from people moving out of urban areas like Fort Wayne into suburban subdivisions. Newer homes like these often came with entry-level laminate or a basic granite, and a few years in, owners want something that suits the way they actually use the kitchen.

Kitchens built for a crowd

Huntertown households are big by local standards: Census estimates put the average at 3.01 people per household, and about 91.8% of homes are owner-occupied. An island in one of these kitchens is where homework, meal prep and the morning rush all happen at once. That is a lot of use, and it is why quartz is a strong fit. It shrugs off juice, coffee and marker better than most stone, never needs sealing and comes in large slabs, which means fewer seams on a long island.

What changes when you replace a newer top

Replacing counters in a house built in the last 15 or 20 years is usually simpler than in an older home. Cabinets tend to be square and level, and plumbing is in good shape. A few things still come up:

  • Overhang and seating. Builder islands often have a small overhang. If you want stools that fit knees comfortably, we can extend it and add supports where needed.
  • Sink style. Swapping a drop-in sink for an undermount pairs well with quartz or granite.
  • Backsplash. Removing an old top can damage a tile backsplash. We look at that at the estimate so it is not a surprise.
  • Matching baths. If your house has more than one bathroom, vanity tops can be measured in the same visit as the kitchen.

Quartz, granite and the rest

We fabricate and install quartz, granite, quartzite and marble, plus solid surface and laminate for spaces like a finished basement wet bar or a mudroom drop zone. With white or gray shaker cabinets, warm white quartz and subtle veined patterns sit well. If you have darker cabinets, granite with movement can tie the room together. We bring samples so you can compare them against your own cabinets and flooring.

History under the new streets

Huntertown began as a clearing called "The Opening," where William T. Hunter founded the settlement around 1837 on the old Lima Plank Road. The town was platted in 1869 but not incorporated until 1966. One local claim to fame: Rapin Andrews began keeping weather records here on July 17, 1839, and his family carried them on until 1874, logging a low of minus 34 degrees in January 1873. Winters are still cold, which is a good reason to pick a stone that handles a hot pot set down in a hurry and a counter that does not mind dry indoor air.

Growing pains and utilities

All that growth has kept the town busy with services; as of 2020 the town council was working on a new water plant. If your home is on a private well, or you simply notice white spots on your faucets, ask us about hard-water care. Hard water leaves mineral film on polished stone over time, and a quick wipe-down habit keeps it under control.

Huntertown Questions

Can you replace builder-grade granite in a newer Huntertown home without redoing the cabinets?

Usually, yes. Cabinets in newer homes are typically sound and level. We remove the old top, check the boxes and install the new one on the same base. The main things to plan for are the backsplash and whether you want to change the sink style.

Can my island overhang be extended for seating?

In many cases. A deeper overhang may need hidden steel supports or corbels depending on the material and the depth. We measure the island and talk through seating before we template.

Can you do the kitchen and all the bathroom vanities at once?

Yes. Templating everything in one visit and installing together keeps the disruption to a short window, and it is easier to coordinate colors across the house.

I have a well. Does that matter for my countertop?

It can. Well water is often harder than treated city water and can leave mineral spots on polished stone. Wiping counters dry helps, and quartz or a well-sealed granite will resist staining.
