Replacing Kitchen Countertops on Existing Cabinets
Kitchen countertop replacement means taking off the old tops, laminate, tile or dated stone, and installing new ones on the cabinets you already have. For many Fort Wayne homes, especially houses where the cabinets were replaced or refinished at some point and are still sound, this is the best value in a kitchen update. It skips the cabinet tear-out, the drywall patching and most of the downtime a full remodel brings.
Will your cabinets carry new tops?
A top-only replacement works when the cabinet boxes are sturdy and the layout still suits you. Signs that you should fix something first:
- The sink base floor is soft, stained or swollen from an old leak.
- Doors no longer line up because the boxes have racked or sagged.
- The old top has a visible dip, which often means the cabinet below has dropped.
- You want the sink or range in a different place.
All of these get looked at during the estimate visit. Small fixes, like shimming a cabinet, replacing a sink base floor or adding a support rail, are normally part of the job and listed on the quote.
What tear-out involves
A laminate top normally lifts off whole after the caulk is cut and the mounting screws are out. Tile tops are slower and dustier, because the tile, mortar bed and backer board all come off. Old stone has to be cut or lifted carefully. Fixr puts removal of old countertops at roughly $50 to $300, either billed separately or included in a quote; Angi lists removal at $5 to $15 per square foot. The backsplash is often affected too. A 4-inch laminate splash comes off with the top; a tile backsplash may crack at the bottom row when the top is lifted. We will tell you ahead of time whether to plan a new backsplash.
Plumbing and appliances
The sink has to be disconnected before the old top comes off, and reconnected after the new one is in and any adhesive has cured. Fixr lists sink reconnection at $45 to $200 per hour for a plumber. A cooktop or drop-in range needs to be disconnected and reinstalled in the new cutout. A new undermount sink is often the moment to replace an old faucet and garbage disposal as well. Allen County's residential permit guide lists plumbing, electrical and structural changes as permitted work. Reconnecting a sink in the same place is different from moving it, adding a gas line or running new circuits; if your plan includes the latter, we flag it so permits and licensed trades are scheduled in.
Living without a kitchen for a few days
Between tear-out and install, you may be without a working sink. For an average kitchen, removal and installation are typically done the same day, with the template taken earlier while the old tops are still in use. If your existing tops are tile or need cabinet repairs underneath, plan for a gap. Setting up a coffee station and paper plates in the dining room helps.
Choosing the new material
Quartz and granite are the usual picks, but a newer high-pressure laminate is a sensible choice for a rental, a quick update before selling, or a kitchen that will be fully remodeled in a few years. Whichever material you choose, the quote shows the same line items so you can compare them fairly.

Kitchen Countertop Replacement Questions
Can I keep my cabinets and only change the countertops?
Yes, if the boxes are sturdy and sit level. We inspect them at the first visit, and small repairs like shimming or a new sink base floor are listed on the quote.
How long does countertop replacement take?
After the template, fabrication takes some time, then an average kitchen has its old tops pulled and new ones set in a single day. Tile tear-outs and cabinet repairs can add time.
Should I buy a new sink with my new countertops?
Not always, but most stone and quartz tops are made for undermount sinks, and an old drop-in sink often does not suit them. Many people replace the sink and faucet at the same time.
Will replacing countertops damage my backsplash?
It can. A laminate splash comes off with the top, and the bottom row of a tile backsplash can crack when the old top is lifted. You will know before the job starts whether to plan on a new splash.
Does Allen County require a permit for a countertop swap?
A like-for-like countertop swap usually does not involve permitted trade work. Allen County lists plumbing, electrical and structural work as needing permits, so moving the sink or adding circuits changes that.
